From Lamb Preparation to Inspections…
Despite only being halfway through February, when it comes to farming planning ahead is essential. Spring farming season is one of the busiest times of the year in agriculture so before the hustle and bustle begins it’s time to make a checklist so you can get the most out of the season.
Here are some of the most important areas to prepare for and how you can stay organised.
Begin planting new crops
Spring is when the majority of crops are planted so you need to decide which crops you’ll be growing – this can depend on how warm or cold the temperatures are in spring. Commonly, carrots, broccoli, shallots, turnips, potatoes and winter vegetables can all be planted during spring so make sure you have everything ready for sowing.
Ensure that your soil is in good condition
Before you do begin sowing your seeds, you will need to check on your soil. Having good quality soil is a farmer’s greatest asset and keeping it in good condition will not only improve the quality of your crops but how resilient it is to changing weather conditions. It’s always a good idea to test the pH and nutrient levels so you can make improvements before you start planting.
Prepare for new lambs
Are you prepared for lambing season? If not, you’d better get a move on! New animals are a big job to look after so if you want a successful flock stay on top of ewe care which includes a nutritional diet, prepare birthing areas and invest in a lambox for your ATV. The Quadcrate lambox attachment will make it easy to transport your lambs and Quadcrate and Transport cage to transport ewes around the farm so you can work as efficiently as possible.
Inspect your entire farm and equipment
With everything that goes on day to day, sometimes repairs can get overlooked or maintenance is pushed further down your priority list. Spring preparation is a great time to take a tour of your farm and complete any necessary repairs or upgrades such as around your borders or machinery. Upgrading to an ATV vehicle with attachments means you’ll be fully kitted out for the busy period.
Stay on top of admin
Nobody likes doing admin but letting it all pile up is an even bigger job to tackle. Make a list of everything you need to manage such as supplies, costs, contracts, invoices and more and complete one thing at a time. Doing your admin little and often means you won’t feel overwhelmed and no area will be neglected!
